Graduation year: 2016

Program/Degree: AAS Culinary Management; AA; BS Engineering Information Systems; Advanced Technical Certification in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics

Why did you choose to attend Daytona State? I chose Daytona State for its excellent culinary program.  I looked at schools from the CIA to Le Cordon Bleu and found that my return on investment, looking at the quality of education and cost, DSC couldn’t be beat.

I made the same cost/benefit comparison when looking for my BS degree.  The instructors’ genuine dedication to help their students succeed set DSC apart from all the other colleges I interviewed.  After meeting with Dr. Eaglin, and discussing how DSC’s program was designed to challenge students, while developing cutting edge skills, I knew this was the place for me.

How has an education from Daytona State made a difference in your life? Aside from gaining strongly competitive career skills, I’d have to say that being surrounded by a wide and diverse student population was the best opportunity I could have hoped for.  The inclusive culture at DSC fosters discussions between people who wouldn’t have a chance to converse anywhere else in their daily life.  I don’t think I appreciated that opportunity at the time, but when I see media stories about increasing censorship of free discussion on college campuses, I am truly grateful for DSC’s commitment to nurturing civil debate between students.

What have you been doing since you’ve graduated? My career really took off after graduation.  I joined a Fortune 500 company in the financial industry as an information security risk analyst.  My managers constantly praise my ability to think critically and apply my technical skills across every area in our environment. It wasn’t a career path that I expected to take, but it gives me the opportunity to touch each and every area of technology and cyber security, from individual endpoints to global networks.  I’m constantly challenged to dig deep into the skills I gained at DSC to keep my company’s products safe and secure for our clients.  And because we have offices across the globe, I get to travel the world doing it.

Career/Employment Highlights?   Recently, during an encryption verification project, I designed a testing procedure, using packet capture analysis for validating data-in-motion encryption.  I had to develop the program from scratch – even the folks at Wireshark never thought to use their tool for that purpose.  As a result, our evidence processing efficiency more than doubled for these controls and we’re better able to demonstrate compliance to the federal regulators.

What is your favorite Daytona State memory?Sausage making class with Chef Dave Weir.  Of all the things I never thought I’d do, making sausage from start to finish was definitely one.  I’ll never take a hot dog for granted again!
