Florida College System Student Government Legislative Update

In late November, 11 delegates from our Student Government Association traveled to Miami to take part in the Florida College System Student Government Association (FCSSGA) Conference. A weekend full of leadership development and team building also included lively discussions regarding legislation pertinent to the Florida College System. While at the November conference, FCSSGA created our platform for the 2015-2016 legislative session. I have included the platform to date for your information.

The Florida College System Student Government Association voted in support of:

·  SB 520: reallocation of funds back to Bright Futures Scholarship Program

·  HB 15/SB 290: expands loan forgiveness for STEM teachers

·  HB 45/SB 120: amends current discrimination law to add sexual orientation and gender identity

·  HB 93: requires detailed policies and procedures regarding usage, storage and review of Law Enforcement Body Cameras in the state of Florida

·  HB 123: requires certain institutions to maintain federal student loan cohort default rates below specified percentages

·  Potential legislation that supports the creation of a task force to take a closer look at homeless students in the college system

·  Potential legislation that would allow for institutions in the college system to charge a transportation fee, to be used exclusively for campus transportation solutions

· The American College Promise

The Florida College System Student Government Association voted not to support:

· HB 163/SB 300: allows for concealed carry permit holders to open carry with provisions

· HB 4001/SB 68: allows for concealed carry on campus

We look forward to traveling to Tallahassee in February, advocating on behalf of our college and the college system. We take great pride in representing Daytona State College at the Capital, as well as our community.
